The compute economy is evolving faster than any prior industrial expansion in American history. Six companies are committing sums that would take an act of Congress if the money were public, and the record of it is scattered across quarterly filings that almost nobody reads end to end. That’s a job for the press, and it’s the reason our data is free. A number on its own doesn’t explain itself. It takes reporters to find out what’s being built, who’s paying for it, and what a community gets in return. We’d rather that work happened with good figures than without them. Just be sure to cite us.
Every figure we publish starts in a company’s own filing or an equivalently authoritative source — a regulator, a statistical agency, an official series. The standard is the primary record: dated, attributable, published by whoever is responsible for it. We read the analysis downstream of that and it often shapes what we look at, but the index itself rests on the source.
